When you are computer user for a long time, you know the fact that 99.09% of virus come from internet alone, remaining 0.91% come from your disks and external drives or by attaching other people's drives to your PC. That fact has not changed much yet but how about you get infected by viruses and you could not figure out its source, its painful!
Evolution Of VirusViruses just like computers have evolved by the time, the old virues were lazy enough to stay in one drive and play with fewer files and were not interested in reproducing themselves in other drives before dying. Modern viruses are really smart or in some sense very annoying, they try their utmost best not to leave the PC, easily.
Dealing with Virus
STEP1: Dealing with virus is a full time job, it require you to be vigilant enough to read whats going on in the technology world or at least what the best anti-virus software is out there, all this being the basic step but very important, usually top rated/downloaded anti-virus is the good way to go if you don't want to research. Free anti-virus are perfectly fine and do great job so don't panic that being a free user, you are not getting any protection.
STEP2: Install the anti-virus with fresh OS install, don't surf million of websites and Unrar files before you don't have any antivirus installed.
STEP3: Watch for drives carrying any sort of virus e.g DVD's CD's USB's. USB being common for carrying infection from one PC to the other. Also watch your PC network, check if someone is properly maintaining the network your PC connects to, if you are not sure, do not disable your firewall, also do watch your internet activity if you suspect any activity while you are not using it, you may have already been infected.
STEP4: Update your OS regularly for any service packs or hotfixes.
Following these steps may help you in reducing possibilities of infecting your pc. Good antivirus softwares are AVG & Avira antivirus, they are free and works really well in detecting virues and not slowing down your PC, however AVG is far more superior in detecting latest virues that can bring havoc to your computing world.
