Democracy is type of a political government where majority of the people rules or governs a certain country or territory. Typically political parties run for elections and whoever gets the most number of votes, governs the country. Equality and freedom are most widely accepted characteristics of democracy.

Show off or actually practiced?
Democracy is probably the most abused term in the modern world, clearly there is no equality anywhere in the world, whether you take U.S into consideration or a 3rd world country, there is no actual practice for equality anywhere, election rigging are common in both 3rd world as well as developed countries, by definition it is us who elect people to represent us, that is once again a lie, as elections are not transparent.
Democracy (as it is implemented all over the world) prevents a normal man, to run for elections as huge costs associated with it.
Democracy (as it is implemented all over the world) divides nation into groups (a.k.a Political Parties), each having its own school of thought (no matter how wrong that thought could be).
Democracy (as it is implemented all over the world) makes political party workers behave like mere puppets or equivalent of a stubborn child sticking to their wrong points or agendas as dictated by the political party leader. This kind of Loyalty to the political party either brought on by bribing or by other means, have devastating effects on a nation.
For Example: A political party (with collaboration of other political parties) can make amendments to the country's constitution for its personal gains or to support some one in return of bribe.
As there is no equality, there is not any kind of freedom in democracy, almost every country has its own institutions like CIA, ISI, RAW, FBI etc, who tape phones calls or spy on someone and openly violate one's country constitution but these organizations are put higher than the law and allowed to murder, harass or threat anyone who tries to deviate from the tracks defined by those agencies. This is clearly not freedom or equality.
Hence democracy is a political system, NOT actually practiced in the modern world, but rather used as a tool for deceiving a nation.
